These 6 different rules applicable in IPL 2025

1. Impact Player Rule

The Impact Player Rule was implemented in the IPL 2023 season, in which teams were allowed to make one change in their playing 11 during the match, in which they can make another player a part of the team. Under this rule, the captain has to announce his playing 11 at the time of toss as well as give the names of 5 more players, out of which he will make one part of the playing 11 through the impact player. Till now the ICC has not implemented this rule in international cricket.

2. Demerit points will be added to the captain’s account if the over rate rule is violated

Till now in the IPL, the captain had to face a match ban if the over rate rule was violated, while now from the upcoming season, some relief has been given to them in this, in which now demerit points will be added to the captain’s account on slow over rate, which will reduce the risk of match ban for them. At the same time, after every four points are added to the account, a fine of 25 to 75 percent can also be imposed on the captain’s match fee and these points will remain added to his account for the next three years.

3. Second new ball to reduce the effect of dew in the second innings

Dew is one of the most important issues in T20 or ODI cricket, in which it is very difficult for the captain who wins the toss to decide whether to bowl or bat first. To reduce its effect in the IPL 2025 season, the rule of using a second new ball after 11 overs during the second innings has been introduced. However, the decision to change the ball will remain with the field umpire. On the other hand, if we look at the ICC rule book, this rule has not been implemented in it till now.

4. Rule of taking review for wide

It has often been seen in international cricket that the umpire’s decision to give or not give wide has an impact on the match. At the same time, in the year 2023 in IPL, teams also got the freedom to challenge these decisions of the umpire, in which they can use DRS against the umpire’s decision to give or not give wide, after which the third umpire will check it and give the right decision.

5. Ban on applying saliva on the ball was removed

One of the biggest rule changes in IPL 2025 is the decision to remove the ban on applying saliva on the ball. Fast bowlers will benefit the most from this. Due to the Kovid-19 epidemic, the ICC had banned applying saliva on the ball, which was also implemented in the IPL, while the ICC later made this rule permanent. At the same time, now it has been decided to remove this ban from IPL 2025.

6. 2 timeouts in an innings

In international T20 cricket, drinks break is taken only once during an innings, whereas in IPL, there is a rule of taking 2 timeouts during an innings, in which a break of 2.5 minutes is given and during this time the teams decide their further strategy in the match.
